Let’s Talk Windows and Drapes
Single Window
A Single Window pair of drapes (two panels) will cover a window that measures anywhere from 36 inches to 42 inches wide including overlap and return. Your drapery rod should be about 4 to 6 inches wider than the window or up to 48 inches wide to completely cover the window when the drapes are drawn and to allow for stack-back when the drapes are open. All draperies are center draw. Each panel is approximately 25 inches wide when pleated and includes seven pre-installed adjustable drapery hooks. Our Classic Custom Drapes are custom made in 12 popular lengths from 84 inches to 116 inches.
Double Window
Our Double Window pair of drapes (still two panels) will cover a window, or any opening, that measures from 72 inches wide to 84 inches wide including the overlap and return, and will accommodate a rod up to about 90 inches wide. Again, the draperies work best when the rod is approximately 4 to 6 inches wider than the opening to cover the window when the drapes are drawn and to allow for the stack back when the drapes are open. These drapes are center draw, and each panel is approximately 50 inches wide when pleated and includes 12 pleats and 14 pre-installed adjustable drapery hooks. Your drapes are custom-made in 12 length options from 84 inches to 116 inches.
Measuring For Your Drapes
Keep It Simple
Because it’s so important it can feel intimidating measuring for your new draperies, so let’s not complicate the process.
- If your window doesn’t have trim simply measure the width of the opening. If it has trim measure from the outside edges of the trim.
- The rod should be installed about 4 to 6 inches wider than the window to allow for stack-back when the drapes are open.
- Next, install your rod above the window trim, usually halfway between the top of the window trim and the ceiling molding.
- Always use your rod width (not the window width) to order your drapes.
- Decide if you’d like the length of your drapes to simply cover the window or go from the bottom edge of the ceiling molding to the floor (or somewhere in between). Your choice.
- Remember, drapery length is always measured from the bottom of the rod to the length you want your drapes. That can be anywhere from the bottom of the window or all the way to the floor or any length in between.
- Lastly, order your beautiful drapes.
All custom drapes open and close best with drapery wands which may be purchased in several lengths (HERE) or at the checkout. And a special selection of classic drapery hardware is also available (HERE) or at the checkout.
